For Xp(t)=−t1+α/(1+α) with 0<α≪1, a point on the ray x=(c0−a)t, 0<a<(γ+1)/2, receives the characteristic emitted at the exponentially small time
s∼(γ+12a)1/α.
(1)
Although s→0, the piston speed −sα has the finite limit −2a/(γ+1), producing the centered-rarefaction profile of the singular limit α=0.
