Every point (Px,Py,Pz) can be reached from the identity by a smooth curve tangent to the Heisenberg horizontal distribution. Put a=2(Pz−PxPy/2+Px) and choose
α(t)=Px+acos(2πt),β(t)=Py+2πsin(2πt).
(1)
Their integrals give x(1)=Px, y(1)=Py, and z(1)=∫01x(t)β(t)dt=PxPy/2−Px+a/2=Pz. The third coordinate measures the effect of the noncommuting horizontal directions; integrability would instead confine horizontal curves to a two-dimensional leaf.
