For spherically symmetric adiabatic flow in a power-law gravitational potential, let X=(r∗/u∗)u∗′ and δ=γ−1. Differentiation at a sonic point gives (2+δ)X2+4δX+4δ−2β=0. Its discriminant is 8[2β−(4−β)δ]; a positive value gives the two local crossing directions.
