On a sphere of radius R, a spherical circle of radius r∈(0,πR) is the locus at spherical distance r from its center. Its polar angle about that center is r/R, so parametrization by longitude has speed Rsin(r/R). Its circumference is therefore 2πRsin(r/R). For small r, this is 2πr−πr3/(3R2)+O(r5), with the deficit determined by the sphere's positive Gaussian curvature.

A spherical circle is a geometric concept in spherical geometry, which deals with figures on the surface of a sphere rather than within a plane. In this context, a spherical circle can be defined as the intersection of a sphere with a plane that passes through the center of the sphere.
