On a spin-s field f, the spin-raising and lowering operations are ðf=−sinsθ(∂θ+icscθ∂φ)(sin−sθf) and ðf=−sin−sθ(∂θ−icscθ∂φ)(sinsθf). The intermediate spin changes after each application. For an axisymmetric scalar f(μ), either operation applied twice yields (1−μ2)f′′(μ).
