Quasi-long-range order Created 2026-10-03 Updated 2026-10-18
Quasi-long-range order means that correlations decay algebraically rather than approaching a nonzero constant. It occurs in the low-temperature phase of the two-dimensional XY model, where spin waves destroy true long-range order but bound vortex pairs preserve power-law correlations.
For a dimensionless Gaussian action , the phase-difference variance at is up to bounded cutoff terms. Gaussian phase averaging then givesEvery positive makes , so there is no conventional long-range order, even when the phase stiffness is finite. This is how an accumulation of gentle, cheap twists destroys global alignment without making every local twist free.
Universal stiffness jump Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-18
The renormalized phase stiffness has this discontinuity at the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition. The algebraic correlation function has exponent at the transition from the ordered side.
The stiffness here is an energy in two dimensions, not an areal mass density. For a neutral superfluid of particles of mass , let be the superfluid number density per unit area. Substituting the superfluid velocity into the kinetic energy gives . Consequently the jump can also be writtenwhere is the thermal wavelength. It is the large-distance superfluid number density, rather than the total density or a locally inferred condensate density, that enters this relation.
Within the vortex-pair renormalization flow, changes from irrelevant to relevant at , with the large-distance dimensionless phase stiffness. Combining this with the spin wave result gives . Above the transition the homogeneous equilibrium phase stiffness vanishes at infinite observation scale. A discontinuous response coefficient is compatible with a diverging correlation length; it does not imply a latent heat.[ref]

Villain model 2026-10-14
A Villain model replaces the cosine Boltzmann factor of the XY model by a periodic Gaussian weight. The Poisson summation formula makes its bond weight equal to . The periodic Gaussian retains integer winding defects and permits an explicit separation into spin waves and vortices in two dimensions. Its replacement of the cosine model is an approximation; subsequent transformations within the Villain model can be exact.
Vortex charge neutrality 2026-10-14
For the Villain model on a periodic two-dimensional lattice, the vortex charge is the oriented curl of its integer bond variable. Summing over all faces cancels every bond twice, proving neutrality. In an infinite plane, a configuration with net winding has far-field spin wave action , so finite-energy localized configurations must have . At an open boundary the total winding instead equals the boundary circulation; neutrality cannot be imposed without a boundary condition.
