For the linear complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with real U,cd,μ and positive real diffusion coefficient scaled to one, the maximum temporal growth rate is μ and the absolute growth rate is μ−U2/[4(1+cd2)]. For U>0, μ<0 is stable, 0<μ<μa has convective hydrodynamic instability, and μ>μa has absolute hydrodynamic instability. Both equality boundaries are marginal in exponential rate.
