For a homogeneous Newtonian fluid with constant kinematic viscosity, a steady axisymmetric purely azimuthal flow obeys vϕ′′+vϕ′/r−vϕ/r2=0. Writing vϕ=rΩ gives (r3Ω′)′=0, so Ω=A+B/r2. A domain containing the rotation axis requires B=0 for regularity; rotating walls in an annulus can sustain B=0. An arbitrary time-dependent profile instead evolves by ∂tΩ=ν(Ω′′+3Ω′/r) within this ansatz.
