For signature (+−−−) and Sϕ=∫−g[(∇ϕ)2/2−V(ϕ)], the convention Tμν=2(δSϕ/δgμν)/−g gives the displayed tensor. Varying the inverse metric yields the derivative product, while varying the volume element yields the term proportional to gμν. A homogeneous field has energy density ϕ˙2/2+V and pressure ϕ˙2/2−V.
