An inequality involving trigonometric functions. For z≥0, the fundamental estimate ∣sinz∣≤z follows from sinz=∫0zcostdt and ∣cost∣≤1. Thus 1−cosz=2sin2(z/2)≤z2/2, and integrating gives 0≤z−sinz≤z3/6. For 0≤z≤π, this implies 0≤z2−sin2z≤z4/3. These bounds give explicit errors for central finite differences applied to sine modes.
