For a nonnegative random variable with finite mean μ and 0≤θ≤1, the part of the expectation on X≤θμ is at most θμ. Subtracting gives E[X1{X>θμ}]≥(1−θ)μ. If the second moment is positive and finite, applying the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality to X and the indicator variable gives the Paley-Zygmund inequality P(X>θμ)≥(1−θ)2μ2/E[X2].
