Walter Kaufmann (physicist) measured electric and magnetic deflections of fast electrons to compare competing accounts of electron inertia. An electric field and a magnetic field constrain different combinations of electric charge, speed and momentum. Combining their deflections therefore probes the relation between motion and inertia. His 1906 report presents detailed apparatus and model comparisons; its historical preference among electron models should not be mistaken for a modern validation of that model.[ref]
