Suppose ∣an∣≤(log(2n))k and A(x)=∑n≤xanlog(x/n)=O(x(logx)β), with 0≤β≤k. For 0<h≤1, direct subtraction gives
A(xeh)−A(x)=h∑n≤xan+∑x<n≤xehanlog(xeh/n).

The last term has absolute value O((xh2+h)(logx)k). Choose h=(logx)(β−k)/2 to obtain the displayed bound, with an additional O((logx)k) term harmless as x→∞ for fixed k. This elementary finite-difference argument converts a logarithmically smoothed Perron formula bound to cancellation in its original partial sum.
