For a nonnegatively graded ring S=⨁m≥0Sm and d≥1, its dth Veronese subring is
S(d)=⨁m≥0Sdm,
(1)
graded by (S(d))m=Sdm. Passing from S to S(d) does not change its projective scheme: the standard affine charts give a canonical isomorphism ProjS≅ProjS(d).

Veronese subring
The degree-d Veronese embedding sends a projective point to all monomials of degree d in its homogeneous coordinates. For example,
ν2:P1⟶P2,[x:y]⟼[x2:xy:y2],
(1)
is a closed immersion with image the conic uw−v2=0.
