Dalton (unit)

The dalton (symbol: Da) is a unit of mass used primarily in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology. It is defined as one twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom in its ground state, which is approximately equal to \(1.66053906660 \times 10^{-27}\) kilograms.

The unified atomic mass unit and dalton are names for the same mass unit:

1 u = 1 Da = \frac{m _{a} ( ^{12} C )}{12},

where the carbon-12 chemical atom is free, at rest, and in its nuclear and electronic ground state. Its conversion to SI mass units is determined experimentally.
