Alpha-decay angular-momentum and parity selection rule
ID: alpha-decay-angular-momentum-and-parity-selection-rule
The ground state of an even-even nucleus has , and the emitted alpha particle also has . In an alpha decay to daughter spin , addition of angular momentum permits total zero only when the relative orbital angular momentum is . Parity conservation gives , hence the daughter has natural parity, . This rule does not itself restrict to even integers. An even- sequence such as requires additional nuclear structure, for example a positive-parity ground-state nuclear rotational band.
