 Antiperiplanar migration in the Beckmann rearrangement

A carbon substituent opposite the activated N–O leaving group migrates onto nitrogen as the N–O bond cleaves. The oxime geometry therefore determines which bond is replaced by a carbon–nitrogen bond.
