C. T. R. Wilson developed the cloud chamber method for making ionization tracks visible. Expansion cools moist gas into a supersaturated state, allowing droplets to condense on ions left by a charged particle. Illumination and photography then turn an invisible passage into a track whose bends, endpoints and branches can be measured. His Nobel lecture traces the physical condensation mechanism and its use in examining ionizing radiation.[ref]
