Under a change of coordinates, the second-derivative terms arising from the chain rule cancel because their coordinate indices are symmetric while the coefficient $X^i{Y}^j-Y^i{X}^j$ is antisymmetric. Consequently $[X,Y]$ transforms as a vector field.
