The terms involving ${\psi }^{\prime }$ cancel because $H$ is self-adjoint, leaving the stated formula. It turns energy derivatives into observable expectations. A smoothly chosen eigenbranch and suitable operator-domain regularity are required, particularly at degeneracies or crossings.
