A heterotrimeric G protein is a signaling assembly with $\alpha$, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ subunits. Receptor-promoted nucleotide exchange on $\alpha$ regulates interactions with $\beta \gamma$ and effectors; both signaling components can contribute downstream.
