 Homotopy classification of cosmological defects

Disconnected vacuum components support walls, noncontractible vacuum loops support line defects, and nontrivial vacuum two-spheres support monopoles in three spatial dimensions. Allowed topology does not alone predict the number formed or their subsequent survival.
