Proper vector subspace

ID: proper-vector-subspace

A proper vector subspace of a vector space is one strictly smaller than the ambient space. In a finite-dimensional vector space, this is equivalent to having smaller dimension: a basis of the subspace can be extended to a basis of the ambient space, and strict inclusion requires at least one additional vector.
