Statistical fluctuation

ID: statistical-fluctuation

A statistical fluctuation is variation between repeated random outcomes or samples. Its scale can be quantified by variance or standard deviation. For independent signal counts with a Poisson mean proportional to deposited energy, the absolute fluctuation grows as the square root of energy and its relative size decreases as the inverse square root.
