Permanent dimensional change accumulated over temperature cycles. anisotropic thermal expansion can create mismatch stresses in a polycrystalline material, but noncancelling irreversible accommodation is needed for net growth; a freely expanding, uniformly heated elastic single crystal returns to its original dimensions.
