thermal insulation reduces unwanted heat exchange. Conduction through supports, convection in gas and thermal radiation require different treatments. vacuum suppresses gas transport but leaves solid conduction and radiation; lowering thermal conductance also increases the temperature rise caused by a fixed internal heat load.
