For a nonrelativistic spin-one-half electron of charge −e, with e>0, the Pauli Hamiltonian is
HP=2m1(−iℏ∇+eA)2+2meℏσ⋅B−eϕ.
(1)
The wavefunction has two spin components and B=∇×A. If π=−iℏ∇+eA, then [πi,πj]=−ieℏϵijkBk; the Pauli matrix multiplication law gives (σ⋅π)2=π2+eℏσ⋅B, explaining the spin-coupling sign. Thus iℏ∂tΨ=HPΨ extends the Schrödinger equation to include the electron's magnetic moment.
