On the sl2 Lie algebra with basis e=E12,h=E11−E22,f=E21, the integral adjoint root polynomials are
x+(t)ex−(s)f=e,=f,x+(t)hx−(s)h=h−2te,=h+2sf,x+(t)fx−(s)e=f+th−t2e,=e−sh−s2f.

These are conjugation by the upper and lower elementary matrices of the special linear group. Those matrices generate SL2(K), and a matrix commuting with both E12 and E21 is scalar. Thus the kernel is precisely {aI:a2=1} over every field, even in characteristic two, and the image is the displayed quotient.
