For constant coefficients and a transverse wavenumber ℓ=0, a planar mean-field dynamo retaining both alpha feedback and shear has dispersion (σ+ηp)2=α2p+iαΩk, p=k2+ℓ2. Marginal stability gives αm2=4η4p4/(4η2p3+Ω2k2). Differentiate with respect to k2: an interior minimum solves 4η2p3+Ω2(3k2−ℓ2)=0. Its derivative with respect to k2 is positive, so a unique positive minimizing k2 exists only above the displayed shear threshold. Below it the minimum is at k=0. The sign of the marginal oscillation frequency is fixed by 2ηpω=αΩk.
