Ami Ben-Amotz is a researcher in algal physiology. His 1973 work with Mordhay Avron showed how Dunaliella parva can use glycerol in osmoregulation. Raising or lowering the surrounding salt concentration was followed by corresponding changes in intracellular glycerol.[ref]
The lack of detectable glycerol leakage over the reported salt range helped distinguish passive loss from regulated production and breakdown. A changing cellular measurement can have several explanations; perturbing the surroundings while testing retention narrows those explanations.[ref]
