For distinct points and 0<λ<1, the distance-ratio locus is a sphere with center (a−λ2b)/(1−λ2) and radius λ∣a−b∣/(1−λ2). Completing the square proves this formula. It encloses a but excludes b, because their distances to the center are λR and R/λ. It is the zero-potential locus of two opposite-sign point charges with magnitude ratio λ. Equal magnitudes instead give a plane.
