Base-p digit sum Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-18
For a nonnegative integer and integer base , write its base-p expansion as
The base- digit sum is , with . When is a prime number, the Legendre formula becomes
To see the connection, divide the base-p expansion by and discard the fractional part. Swapping the resulting finite sums and using a finite geometric series gives
In particular, , so and . The leading numeral digit contributes thirteen, the next contributes eight, the next one, and the units contribute zero. Thus the base-p digit sum compresses the same contribution ledger into information already present in positional notation.
Kummer's theorem 2026-10-18
For a prime number and integers , the P-adic valuation of the binomial coefficient equals the number of arithmetic carries in the base- addition of and .[ref] Indeed, subtract the two denominator factorial valuations in the Legendre formula:
Each arithmetic carry accounts for one unit of this quotient by subadditivity of the base-p digit sum. In particular, the binomial coefficient is divisible by exactly when at least one carry occurs.
For , the factorial counts give
The matching base-p expansions are and . Their units add to two; the next column gives , sending one carry into the nines column. That column then gives , and no further carry occurs. The result is . The base-p digit sums check the same result: . Consequently is divisible by three but not by nine.
Figure 1. . On the left, the base-p expansion gives . On the right, has exactly one carry, from the threes column into the nines column. Kummer's theorem therefore gives . Details.
The equivalence is true. Write for the total size at level of the core tower of a partition , and for the corresponding total size in its quotient tower of a partition. We use the size relation and the P-adic valuation of a symmetric-group character degree from the core tower:
Here is the base-p digit sum. These imply the character degree coprime to p from the core tower criterion: if , then exactly when at every level. Indeed carrying units from one position to the next decreases the sum of coefficients by ; the valuation vanishes precisely when there are no carries.
For , we also use power-core truncation of a prime-core tower: for , its core tower agrees with that of below level and is empty at every level at least . Moreover , the weight of a partition for modulus . To see the truncation, removal of a rim hook of length preserves the first -core and, under the abacus divisible-hook correspondence, becomes removal of a -hook in one quotient component. Iterating preserves all the lower cores; after all such removals, quotient level is empty.
If , the criterion gives , for , and the lower are the base- digits of . It follows that , and
Conversely, suppose and . Then and its lower core-tower sizes are the digits of . Quotient level of has total size . Each component there has size less than , hence is already a -core and has empty -quotient. Thus and every higher level is empty. Combined with truncation, this gives exactly the digits of , so .
Therefore
If , necessarily and ; the -core is empty, its weight is , and the Hook-length formula shows that every degree is coprime to . Thus the equivalence holds in that boundary case too, with the empty partition having degree one.
We use the core-quotient bijection for partitions: an ordered -tuple and a fixed -core determine a unique partition of an integer, with
The irreducible characters in both and therefore correspond to the same ordered tuples of total size . Replacing the empty core of a partition by while keeping the quotient of a partition fixed gives a bijection from to . In particular .
For such a pair, all levels of the core tower of a partition above level zero agree. At level zero, their sizes are and , respectively. Put . When , the base-p digit sum satisfies
The P-adic valuation of a symmetric-group character degree from the core tower then gives
Thus the same bijection preserves degree coprimality to and restricts to a bijection between the indicated sets of irreducible characters of degree coprime to p. Consequently
For , take to be the empty partition; the construction becomes the identity.

For nonnegative integers and an integer base ,
In column addition, every arithmetic carry replaces units in one numeral digit by one unit in the next position and therefore decreases the base-p digit sum by . Count each outgoing carry separately, including each step of a chain. There is equality precisely when there are no carries. For prime number bases, Kummer's theorem turns this digit-sum deficit into a prime exponent.
