A small conducting sphere of radius a has electric polarizability α=4πϵ0a3=a3/k. In the field E≃kQ1/R2 of a much more strongly charged distant source, its leading induced contribution is −αE2/2, in addition to kQ1Q2/R for its fixed net charge. Taking −dU/dR gives FR≃kQ1Q2/R2−2kQ12a3/R5. The approximation requires a/R≪1 and control of the source's finite-size corrections; the threshold is not an exact finite-sphere result.
