Collision detection determines whether geometric objects meet, under a specified convention for touching. A bounding volume test can reject a pair before a more detailed shape test.
The broad phase generates candidate pairs with inexpensive conservative enclosure tests. An accepted pair still needs the narrow phase.
The narrow phase checks the actual objects for candidates retained by the broad phase. Its numerical guarantees depend on the chosen shape test.
