A colloidal gel is a mechanically persistent, space-spanning particle network arrested on the observation timescale. Attractions can produce such a network during aggregation or arrested phase separation. A gel is a dynamical, often nonequilibrium state; its appearance does not establish an additional equilibrium thermodynamic phase.
