An experimental atomic physicist who coauthored a measurement of collective density disturbances in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The experiment launched sound with a focused laser beam and followed its propagation with repeated nondestructive images, connecting a macroscopic speed of sound to a dilute gas's quantum excitation spectrum.[ref]
