For a nonnegative random constant individual hazard Λ, write Mk(t)=E[Λke−Λt]. The population survivor function is M0 and its hazard is M1/M0. Under the integrability needed to differentiate, Mk′=−Mk+1, so
h′=M02−M2M0+M12=−Var(Λ∣T>t).

The conditional distribution is weighted by e−Λt. This proves decreasing population hazard without any decrease in individual hazards and explains survival selection in a heterogeneous population.
