If and the minimal polynomial of factors modulo a rational prime as
then
and the prime ideal has norm .
This gives an explicit instance of unique factorization of ideals in a number field.
A number field is monogenic when its ring of integers has a power integral basis, meaning for some algebraic integer .
Let have degree , and suppose a rational prime factors into distinct prime ideals of norm . If , then is not monogenic. Otherwise the Dedekind factorization theorem would force the degree- minimal polynomial of a power-basis generator to have distinct linear factors over , although only the polynomials are available.
