For g=diag(1,−1,−1,−1) and the block-diagonal standard representation of the gamma matrices, write a positive-energy Dirac spinor as (ξ,η)T. The Dirac equation gives η=(σ⋅p)ξ/(E+m). Choosing two orthonormal two-spinors χs yields the displayed positive-frequency solutions. Negative-frequency solutions are vs=E+m((σ⋅p)ηs/(E+m),ηs)T multiplying eip⋅x. They obey (p+m)vs=0. Both have norm 2E; their Dirac adjoints give urus=2mδrs and vrvs=−2mδrs. Spatial rotations act on each two-spinor with generators σj/2, explaining spin one-half.
