Dmitry Budker develops optical methods for measuring weak magnetic fields. Resonant light interacts with an atomic vapor, preparing or probing atomic polarization whose evolution depends on the field. Measuring an optical signal therefore converts atomic magnetic response into a sensitive magnetometer. His coauthored review connects this method with geomagnetic sensing, detection of nuclear magnetic resonance and tests of fundamental symmetries.[ref]
