For a semiclassical wave packet in an isolated energy band, vi=ℏ−1∂kiε and ℏk˙j=Fj imply v˙i=∑j(m∗−1)ijFj. The inverse effective-mass tensor is the Hessian matrix of the dispersion divided by ℏ2. Along a unit vector e, 1/me∗=∑ijei(m∗−1)ijej. The Laplacian is its trace: ℏ−2∇k2ε=tr(m∗−1). Thus in d isotropic dimensions the scalar mass is dℏ2/(∇k2ε), rather than ℏ2/(∇k2ε).
