For a differential three-form A with F=dA on an oriented eleven-dimensional manifold, varying ∫(21F∧⋆F+F∧F∧A) with fixed metric gives δS=∫δA∧(d⋆F+3F∧F) up to a boundary term. Indeed d(δA∧F∧A)=dδA∧F∧A−δA∧F∧F, so the two differentiated F factors and the differentiated A factor contribute equally. The shift A↦A+dΛ changes the density by d(F∧F∧Λ), preserving the field equation.
