For ZE[J]=∫Dϕe−SE[ϕ]+∫Jϕ, define WE=logZE, φ=δWE/δJ and the Legendre transform ΓE[φ]=∫Jφ−WE[J]. Its functional derivatives generate Euclidean one-particle irreducible vertices. A bosonic Gaussian integral about a background gives the one-loop term 21TrlogSE(2)[φ]. This is the Euclidean version of the quantum effective action, with signs fixed by e−SE rather than eiS.
