An Eulerian fluid perturbation compares a perturbed field with its equilibrium value at one fixed spatial point. It differs from the perturbation following a displaced material element: Δf=f1​+ξ⋅∇f. Linearizing a static fluid velocity gives v1​=∂t​ξ.
