If S is compact and V is a smooth vector field, then
ϕ(p)=expp(V(p))
(1)
is smooth and well-defined by the Hopf-Rinow theorem. The maps ϕt(p)=expp(tV(p)) form a smooth homotopy from the identity to ϕ, so deg2(ϕ)=1.
