For a smooth one-form α and smooth vector fields X,Y,
dα(X,Y)=X(α(Y))−Y(α(X))−α([X,Y]).
(1)
In coordinates the derivatives of the components of X,Y cancel against the Lie bracket of vector fields, leaving (∂iαj−∂jαi)XiYj. This formula extends the coordinate definition of the exterior derivative to arbitrary frames.
