If a fraction f of an otherwise uniform optical cavity contains gain medium, define upper-state density per gain volume but photon density per whole cavity volume. Stimulated upper-state depletion is vgσNn, while cavity photon production is fvgσNn. Thus N˙=S−vgσNn−N/τ2 and n˙=(fvgσN−1/τc)n. Above threshold N=Nth and n=fτcNth(r−1)/τ2, where r=Sτ2/Nth.
