For an internal gravity wave ray at angle θ to the horizontal reflecting from a slope at angle α, conservation of tangential wavenumber gives
γ=kincidentkreflected=sin(θ−α)sin(θ+α).

At a subcritical internal-wave reflection, γ>1: the reflected wavelength shortens and its wavelength-averaged energy density increases by γ2.
