For a translation-invariant difference operator (Lu)m=∑jajum+j, its Fourier symbol is ℓ(θ)=∑jajeijθ. Applying L to a Fourier mode eimθ multiplies that mode by ℓ(θ). Symbols turn constant-coefficient stencil equations into scalar algebraic equations and expose their Von Neumann stability analysis.
