With signature (+,−,−,−) and L=−FμνFμν/4, combine a time translation α∂0Aν with the gauge transformation of parameter −αA0. Its Noether current is Jμ=−FμνF0ν−δ0μL, the gauge-invariant energy current. The density is (∣E∣2+∣B∣2)/2. On the source-free field equations it differs from the canonical translation current by ∂ν(A0Fμν), an antisymmetric superpotential divergence, so total energies agree when the boundary term vanishes.
